The New Age of Public Tax Accounting

When you think of the phrase “tax firm”, what comes to mind? If you’re a client, probably a stuffy office, suits, intimidating paperwork, and a lot of anxiety. If you’re an accountant… probably the same, actually. It’s 2023, folks, and the world of accounting has a lot of catching up to do. This year I formed my partner firm, Prisma Tax Group, because I see a path forward in the future of accounting. Here’s how we’re doing it. 

1. EVERYTHING is digital

Gone are the days of 40 page packets you need to physically print and sign and scan. We send all clients end-to-end encrypted online forms that only require a screen and an internet connection. And because we’re a remote-first business, we can help clients no matter where they are in the U.S. We are in the digital era and there are countless user-friendly and convenient solutions that don’t sacrifice security and will meet clients right where they are - behind a computer or a phone.

2. Empowering clients with education

People are intimidated by taxes because the average American is taught virtually nothing about it in school. Clients actually want to understand write-offs, tax processes, tax forms, brackets, etc. - not just send papers with all their financial info into the void and hope for the best. They are looking for professionals that are actually going to spend time researching & helping maximize their tax situation, answer questions that will help them make better decisions and strategize their growing business.

The most important thing we tell clients is that there is absolutely no shame in being confused, IT’S CONFUSING! Taking the time to answer questions, break things down, ELI5, is not below us. Ultimately, education empowers us to make better business decisions, which is a win for everyone. 

3. Judgment-free as a priority

Many of my clients have told me that they’ve experienced judgment from previous tax professionals - for their work, for their confusion, for the complexity of their tax situation. At the core of our client relationships is the whole-hearted belief that everyone deserves dignity and respect. We offer a safe space for clients to ask us questions at any point in their journey and offer insight for everyone’s unique career path.

4. Valuing employee well-being

Public accountants are notoriously unhappy. They’re usually mandated to work 60+ hour work weeks stuck in a cubicle, with little to show for it aside from maybe a bonus. I’ve been there, so I’m fully aware that 60 hour work weeks can often be unavoidable. But there is a better way, and other industries are proving it. Happier employees are less likely to burn out, do better work, and also deserve that happiness. Everyone at Prisma Tax Group works from the comfort and convenience of their home with flexible scheduling, that way if there is actually 60 hours of work to do, we can do it at our own pace.
